The UNT System Board of Regents named Dr. Neal Smatresk the sole finalist for the UNT presidency on Nov. 20. Smatresk is currently the president at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. If confirmed after a required minimum 21-day period, Smatresk will become UNT’s 16th president, succeeding President V. Lane Rawlins who is retiring.
The University of North Texas System Board of Regents and UNT System Chancellor Lee Jackson are conducting a national search for the 16th president of the University of North Texas, which was founded in 1890 and is the flagship institution of the UNT System and the fourth-largest university in Texas.
The next president will succeed V. Lane Rawlins, who announced his retirement in March 2013, after serving as UNT's president since May 2010. President Rawlins will serve as President Emeritus upon his retirement.
Chancellor Jackson named a 17-member Presidential Search Advisory Committee, led by Regents Vice Chair G. Brint Ryan, a UNT alumnus, and composed of a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders. The board, Chancellor Jackson and the Presidential Search Advisory Committee will work with national search firm Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates Inc. to identify strong, experienced candidates capable of elevating UNT to its next level of success. The new president is expected to be appointed during the second half of 2013.
